Appearance and Personality

Leaf is sixteen at the start of of Beanstalk^[1]Leaf is several feet shorter than Jack Farris^[2]. By the end of Remember the Dust, he is more than five feet tall^[3]. He is muscular, sturdy, and broad-shouldered^[4], later described as having a “soft belly^[5]. He has the brown skin and accent characteristic of the Forest’s inner farm belt^[6]. Leaf is often described as "smiley"^[7]

Leaf is often described as energetic^[8], and this characteristic becomes a deciding factor when he gets into fights at the Academy. He can get easily distracted or nervous^[9]. When angered, Leaf becomes impulsive and often has to be held back from fights^[10].

History

Leaf comes from the Forest's inner farm belt. Growing up among the other farmhands, he resented being called "kiddo" because of his height^[11]His farmboy background makes him comfortable with horses^[12]. He chose to apply for a guide major^[13] (unlike Jack Farris, who applied for hero but received an acceptance as a guide).

He refuses to talk about the origin of his nickname or the tattoo he has on his shoulder^[14].

Abilities and Attributes

Leaf is an academy guide. He is responsible for initiating the stable loft gang, along with Red. He has an interest in the history of public policy^[15]. He is known for enthusiastically joining in tavern singing and making up his own stanzas, even standing on tables to conduct the entire room^[16].
